Counseling vs. Life Coaching

Not sure which approach is right for you? In many cases, both! Counseling and life coaching are often used together to provide holistic support.

Though distinctly different, counseling and coaching can be combined to provide unique insight into your situation. They work together to reveal hidden dependencies or blockers that may have been preventing you from moving forward.

Let’s say, for example, you came to us for life coaching. Together with one of our talented therapists, you would work on defining your goals and the paths toward them. If, however, during the life coaching process it became apparent that other aspects of your life were preventing you from reaching these goals, your therapist would provide you with the counseling support you need to make progress.

How Each Method Works

Counseling works by helping you objectively look at the situational behaviors, feelings, and thoughts that may be causing problems in your life.  Coaching helps you achieve your personal goals by bringing balance to your life.

Counseling helps you develop more effective ways of dealing with difficult situations. It is a joint effort by which you and your therapist identify your goals — what you want to achieve — and agree on how you’ll make progress.  If you require medication or additional services that we can’t provide, we will connect you with an appropriate professional in the legal, financial, physical, or spiritual health field and stay in touch with them to follow up on your care.

You may benefit from counseling if:

  • You feel like you can’t do it alone
  • You feel trapped, like there’s nowhere to turn
  • You worry all the time and never seem to find the answers
  • The way you feel affects your sleep, your eating habits, your job, your relationships, or your everyday life
  • It feels like things aren’t getting any better

Coaching helps you achieve your personal goals by bringing balance to your life.  Through a process of self-assessment guided by your coach, you will focus on taking action toward realizing your vision of a centered, fulfilled life.  Together, you will assess your individual strengths in many areas, including your career, your health, your physical environment and your self-image.  Through life coaching, you will evaluate your needs and set attainable personal goals.  You will learn what you need to do to reach your full potential and make your dreams a reality.

You may benefit from life coaching if:

  • You seek balance in your work, family, and spiritual life
  • You feel tired, stuck, bored, or unfulfilled
  • You want to live with more passion, meaning, and mastery
  • You are in the middle of a major life transition (career change, divorce, etc.)
  • You want more time, money, and happiness
